You started it, now you clean it up!

When I started out training in PHP in 2004, I never new it would become so big. There were only a handful of companies working on it at that time, it was a small technology unknown and untouched that I used to get my freshers get an easy job.

Things have changed. PHP has now become number one, and a couple of hundred companies have started up in Kolkata itself.  Now, PHP has become the #1 training for Freshers.

Till 2007, the big companies like TCS, WIpro, Infy.. etc were recruiting thousands and thousands of freshers from all over India. If a fresher was any good, he’d get a job in one of those companies. From 2008, things started going bad. Eventually, in 2009, due tothe recession, there has been no placements.

So while till 2007, the cream freshers never went for PHP, now the trend has reversed. The best , the toppers, having no job, are giving their best shot to PHP, and so, the quality of PHP programmers is shooting up.

There was never a good time for PHP companies!

On the darker side, competition has increased in PHP. To counter it, we doubled the syllabus of our course, as well as its duration. The price was raised by 20% (Sorry for that, but had to!). We now teach LAMP, Ajax, Smarty, Paypal, Joomla etc. to freshers in our MVT Course ( PHP COurse).

The companies find that even the experienced demanding Rs.12,000+ per month don’t know as much as our freshers, who would happily work for half that salary. To top it, these freshers have a much better aptitude, communication skills level that them! The companiens find the freshers a little slow, but that isn’t much of a concern since projects are a little slow ( slowdown!) and their savings are great.

So we’re replacing old, coslty and outdated programmers in these PHP companies with fresh, modern, efficient and intelligent programmers. I have now been suggested by one company to start teaching tools like Eclipse for PHP (PDT developed by IBM ) as well, which we’ll do soon. The projects in average PHP companiens are a mess – they follow little coding standards, and almost no project management / bug tracking tools are used. Now with our army of Web2.0 programmers, I intend to change that.

I started PHP in kolkata, so it’s my job to clean it up.

Mail Me

I’ve decided to provide 100% free training of PHP language to everybody.

Why?

Because PHP has given me so much, I should give it back something too.

Any Fresher is welcome to join our training “PHP in 24 hours” without any charges.

At the end of the training, you will be able to write programs in PHP and execute them. This is not a cerification course.

Cheers!

When I was a fresher myself at the Indian Instt of Information technology, I used to hope that I could become a photographer. It was so much better than being a programmer. Instead of watching football on TV, the news company would pay me to go there and take photos!

What will you do when you go on a vacation to a beautiful place? Take pictures, right? A photographer does exactly that – but he gets paid instead of having to pay!

And all he needs to carry a light  250gm camera – not with a 2000gm Laptop hanging on one side that makes you feel dis balanced. And no, he doesnt have to stare at a 2 dimensional array of sick pixels all day long that make him shortsighted, with a crooked neck and paining back!

With thoughts of becoming a photographer, I purchased a camera and started shooting!

My stint as a sports photographer:

didn’t  last long.  I took this photgraph, but they rejected it. So I switched to the turf and shot this:

but they said my angles were all wrong! What idiots.  I realized that the sportsmen were too ignorant to see the intellect in my photography. So I switched to Politics.

But Mr Chowng Wong sued me for this picture. Now you tell me, did I take this picture from a wrong angle? All politicians are blind to see my work’s beauty, so I thought I’d shoot architectural wonders 3353735956_67f298d765_o

3353736206_269dd8c106_o

but it seemed those places were too alive and kicking and filled with disturbing people who came in my way just as I clicked.

Let’s go to a beach and shoot some serene backgrounds, I thought. But strange Yoga addicts sabotaged my pics!

3353734612_cba9b56784_o3353735084_7fcc1c472b_o

And then I went crazy and started shooting  just  about anything I could focus my lens on.

3352909583_17cb8e6888_o23352910405_8ef875ebee_o13352910539_dc4afdb2c7_o13352910813_feee82140f_o13353734952_18ab0734d8_o3353735738_e4f832b36c_o13353734710_fafb86330c_o1

But everybody said my pictures were taken from the wrong angles! Morons.  I quit photography! So now, I’m a programmer.

Well, I did copy paste all these photos, they are not my own. See – I have everything to be a good programmer!

2009 Pasout? My Advice for your future.

Here are a list of things a Fresher must do in the current market.

1.  Go for higher studies – PhD, MS, MTech, MBA – whichever fits you best.

2. Learn PHP, SQL, Java and HTML very well and work on it part time to make money. Here, “very well” should be taken seriously, the quality of “Learning” we are used to in West Bengal will not do. Learn it like a respectable programmer, like a pro. It is difficult, but has its returns.

Do both of these to survive the present and prepare best for the future.

All the Best!

Want to start your company? Some Advice.

If you want to start your own company, I have a piece of advice. Do it only if you are 100% honest to yourself as well as others.

I’ve seen at least 14 companies start up and fail. The most common reason for failure was that the founders were dishonest to themselves.

A person is dishonest to himself if he sets up a goal of making 1 lakh per month without working hard enough. Sure, it is easy to make that much once you are in business. There are three ways you can make 1 lakh per month.

1. Cheat your customers. : For example, Vishal (name changed), started a traning institute for freshers. He advertised in papers and when freshers came to his office, he made false claims that his company was having the best training and awesome placements. The freshers joined, misled by his false promises.

The fate of Vishal: When you cheat, you fall in trouble. When you fall in trouble, you ask others for help. But who wil; help a cheater? Other cheaters, of course.

Slowly, all honest people left Vishal. He did not have one dependable partner / employee. The cheaters cheat amongst themselves , and cannot work as a company for long. Eventually, Vishal ended up being a lone cheater and anybody who joined his company soon and were unfaithful.

The freshers came to know about the tuth of Vishal’s company and its name became dirty. Got married with a wife who realized who he really was and could not love him.Vishal quit his company and joined a college as a placement office – what can be a worse ending to an entrepreneur?

2. Cheat Yourself: Another person, called Ramesh (Name Changed) started a company. His plan was to start a software company and grow it fast to become a big player.

Ramesh was dishonest to himself.

If he actually made about 30,000 in a month, he would tell others that he made about 6-7 lakh an year.

When he went to a restaurant, he would order costlier meals and would always tip the waiter because he believed he was a rich man and he should behave like one.

When he was travelling in a bus and a phone call came, he would talk in smart english and a bit louder than usual  because he wanted to ‘impress’ anybody who was hearing.

He purchased a blackberry phone worth Rs.25,000. He didn’t need it, he bought it because he felt it was his status symbol.

He spent more money on his clothes than he saved in a month.

So this is what Ramesh did when his software company went well: He hired 12 freshers with a monetary bond of 50,000 to make his company bigger, promising them a salary of 8000 per month after training.

But something went wrong. The software market went down and Ramesh didn’t realize his life was a house built with no foundation. He could not pay the salaries, he could not manage his employees well.

He should have spent lesser on clothes and mobile and spent more time working & learning hard. A leader is not someone who is dressed the best, he is the one who is the best. From inside. Ramesh didn’t work hard enough to earn the Blackberry and the costly shirt. He took shortcuts.

So when his company was falling, Ramesh was disturbed. He took to unethical practice. He told a customer that he was  a big company and that he can do their big project with ease. He told his customers his employees were proficient in mobile programming and took a big project. He did it to save his company. The client was impressed and gave his company a big project.

But the employees could not deliver it. Ramesh could not manage it. The Client sued him, and the employees demanded their 50,000 deposit back. Ramesh went to jail.

Why ? Because if you’re dishonest to yourself, you are one step away from being dishonest to others.

3. Be honest to everyone and work hard : Yes, this is the best way to make 1 lakh per month. And then, starting from there to increase it exponentially.

There is no other way. I’ve seen 14 companies fail, but there are millions in reality. Unfortunately, in India, cheaters come a longer way before getting caught. So whether Ramalinga Raju, Ashok Jadeja or that boy in your class who always cheated – they will all finally end up where cheaters go – in shame with no money.

Before you set up an aim to make money – think , are you working hard enough for it? If no, then you’re probably cheating. That would be a bad idea. A very bad idea.

PHP ASP JSP job trends in the last 2 years:

Here is something every fresher should know:

jobgraph

Asp, Jsp, Php Job Trends

This graph displays the percentage of jobs with your search terms anywhere in the job listing. Since October 2007, the following has occurred:

I knew this would happen way back in 2004. This is why I started India’s first PHP training institute when most freshers didn’t even know what it was. Today, experienced .Net programmers are coming to FreshersIndia for advanced PHP training.

( PHP surpassed ASP.Net in 2003 to become #1 on the internet and has remained there as of today )

IBM : The PHP Crusader

When a new startup company has a brilliant idea and a strong base of fundamentals, the big shots try to buy it out. If they can’t buy, they partner with it for a share of profit.

IBM, Intel, Adobe, SAP the bigshots, do not have much of a presence in the web industry (server side).  Microsoft has ASP.net , Sun has JSP.

So IBM did something unexpected – it turned to open source and became a big player there.

IBM invested heavily in PHP.  Other companies like Intel, Oracle, SAP, Adobe joined in.  Intel , SAP provided huge monetary investment, IBM put its programmer workforce and helped with its Eclipse product and developed a PDT.

php

As a result, with all big companies Except Sun Microsystems (JSP) , Microsoft (ASP) partnering with PHP , it became the superpower and number 1 on the internet.

This is why since 2003, PHP has been No.1 on the web. 3 Cheers for Open Source.

.NET hit very hard by recession.

I saw a man holding a book on Ajax when traveling in the Metro train yesterday. Being very interested in Ajax myself, I started a conversation. He turned out to be an IBM employee, this is what he said:

“There are very less projects in .NET now a days. Our entire team at IBM is sitting idle, nothing to do. I’m afraid we might lose our jobs”.

A couple of years back, I used to have a lot of Perl programmers coming to learn Advanced PHP from us because Perl is going obsolete.  Now,  the same is happening with .NET. Many .NET programmers are being instructed by their company to learn PHP, some being sent to us.

For example, an old software firm sent several all of its senior .NET programmers ( really senior – big fat and bald programmers )  to learn the intricacies of PHP.

Microsoft could not do anything big on the web,  .NET was beaten by PHP, hotmail was beaten by Yahoo Mail, MSN was beaten by Google. Now, Windows mobile is way behind Symbian and IPhone and it does not seem Microsoft will be doing well in the Mobile generation. Unless Microsoft launces something big soon, it won’t be able to survive just by a PC operating system.

The Microsoft .NET Framework is a software framework that can be installed on computers running Microsoft Windows operating systems. It includes a large library of coded solutions to common programming problems and a virtual machine that manages the execution of programs written specifically for the framework. The .NET Framework is a key Microsoft offering and is intended to be used by most new applications created for the Windows platform.

Some idiotic HR from a f**** company emailed me  yesterday.

“We have huge requirements for Freshers” she said.

Here was her terms and conditions:

1. Freshers will be taken on a 1 year probation.

2. First 6 months, they will be put into training (DotNet, J2EE) with a stipend of Rs.2000 pm

3. Next 6 Months, if they are performing well, the salary would be raised to 8000pm

4. After that, salary would be 3.5 lakh per annum, subject to performance appraisal.

In very small letters, it was written at the bottom

“Security deposit of Rs.90,000 to be made before joining” etc etc.

I was very, very angry. I am angry now. Again, many freshers will fall in the trap. They will pay Rs. 90,000 , waste 3-4 months getting a stipend of Rs.2000 and will be suddenly sacked for poor performance. God help them.

I replied to the company that they are cheaters and deserve to go to hell.

Another Infogen Global is coming up. Beware, Freshers.

For those who don’t know about infogen::

It duped 12000 students from west bengal, giving offers after campus interviews and charging them Rs.50k deposit each. The CEO and his family are in jail now.
